Sandwell Breathes: clean air event at Balaji Temple

16 November 2021

The Balaji Temple, with support from Sandwell Council, will be hosting an event called ‘Sandwell Breathes’ this Saturday (13 November) to promote clean air quality.

Sandwell Breathes is part of celebrations for Inter-Faith Week.

There will be events taking place at the Temple this Saturday, including children’s activities, a nature walk, yoga and a workshop to look at how the community and Temple can work together around air quality issues.

The Balaji Temple Chairman, Dr Kanagaratnam, said: “The Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple is delighted to host the Sandwell Breathes event. We are excited to work with local people and organisations to discuss and understand how the Temple can contribute to improving air quality, along with looking at other opportunities to improve wellbeing.

“We are also pleased to welcome the Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Mr John Crabtree OBE, to our event, to speak about the Queen’s Green Canopy, along with some of our local Sandwell Council councillors, who will be planting the first of more than 400 trees and saplings in the grounds of the Temple.”

Councillor Ahmad Bostan, cabinet member for environment, said: “This event is a great opportunity to take part in a range of activities that focus on air quality issues. Improving air quality can deliver substantial health benefits and can have an impact on reducing premature deaths and diseases.”

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, cabinet member for adults, social care and health, said: “This event promises to be a fun and engaging way to address and inform conversations on what we do to tackle air pollution locally.  I would encourage all residents to come along to the Temple on Saturday and find out more about this important issue.”

Sandwell Breathes takes place at Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple, Tividale from 10am-4pm on Saturday, 13 November.  Entry is free
